Food is the key to prevention and treatment of many diseases, such as cardiovascular disease (CVD), diabetes, high blood pressure, neuro-degenerative diseases and cancer.

According to Statistics Canada, cardiovascular disease is responsible for 1 in 3 deaths in Canada. Given that 1 in 5 adults have high blood pressure, it is often the reason for most medical consultations. 1. Additionally, CVD, high blood pressure, and weight problems are all risk factors associated with diabetes.

Did you know that about 90% of diabetes cases and 80% of cardiovascular diseases could be avoided by a lifestyle change2-3?

Once diagnosed, it is important to know that changes to lifestyle, including weight loss and a balanced diet, can have short-term effects such as reducing high blood pressure, harmful levels of cholesterol, and glycaemia. It may even bring about reduced medication intake. 4

Did you know that there’s a correlation between an improvement in biochemical levels (e.g.: cholesterol, blood sugar) and the time spent with a nutritionist? According to several studies, 3-4 nutritional consultations are associated with a significant reduction in cholesterol and drug-related costs5-8.

In other words, every $1 invested in a nutritional consultation can generate a reduction of $3.03 in the amount spent on medication for a medical condition8.Nutria partenaire de GPM en nutrition

A consultation consists of an initial meeting with a nutritionist for a “personalized nutrition evaluation”. This evaluation includes taking anthropometric measurements, identifying your eating habits and lifestyle, preparing a treatment plan appropriate for your particular condition, information, counseling, and documentation. Depending on your needs, the nutritionist may suggest further consultations. During these nutritional follow-ups, the nutritionist will adjust your treatment plan and set new goals.

There are many advantages to consulting a nutritionist:

  • Improve eating habits
  • Better control of  cholesterol, blood pressure, or blood sugar.
  • Weight gain or weight loss.
  • Treat allergies or food intolerances
  • Ease digestive disorders (e.g.: diarrhea, constipation, irritable bowel, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, diverticulosis/itis, gastric reflux/heartburn)
  • Cope with the effects of menopause
  • Increase your energy level and/or sports performance
  • Receive guidance on living with cancer, obesity, breastfeeding, etc.

A nutritionist can also provide advice on various topics. The following points will provide  you with ideas for a healthy lunch packed with flavour and colour:

  • Re-invent the sandwich and go for different breads (e.g.: pita, English muffins, bagels). Choose whole-grain products to increase your intake of fibre and vitamins.
  • Experiment with new condiments and fillings for your sandwiches, such as canned tuna, low-fat cream cheese, diced cucumber, roast turkey slices, low-fat cheddar and applesauce.
  • Cook extra portions when you prepare supper. They’ll be useful for lunches during the week.
  • Include fruit and vegetables in every meal. They add colour and lots of nutritional value. Prepare raw vegetables in advance and keep them in an air-tight container (without water) to preserve all their vitamins and minerals. This makes them easy to add to the main meal or even to pair with a glass of low-sodium tomato/vegetable juice.
  • To finish off the meal, try a vanilla yoghurt with a mix of small fruits sprinkled with muesli, or two peach halves garnished with cottage cheese and chopped nuts.
  • Go for water, vegetable juice, 100% real fruit juice and milk instead of fruit drinks or fizzy drinks.
  • Put together nutritious combinations that you can nibble on throughout the day to cut cravings (e.g.: fresh fruit, English muffin, yoghurt or a piece of cheese).
